Sound is everywhere in the marine environment and hearing is therefore a very important for stimuli for fish. They use sound for orientation and communication, during migration, aggregation and spawning, but also for detection of prey and predators.

The soil-dwelling, filamentous bacteria of the genus Streptomyces are renowned for their production of useful secondary metabolites including antibiotics. The work described in this thesis provides new insights on the role and regulation of antibiotic production and resistance in these bacteria.

Als eersten ter wereld hebben studenten van de Leidse master Computer Science les gehad in het programmeren van een quantumcomputer. ‘Hiermee zijn eindelijk de complexe levensechte problemen van de maatschappij op te lossen.’

Studenten blijven tevreden over hun opleiding en docenten, maar studentenwelzijn en de aansluiting op de arbeidsmarkt blijven belangrijke aandachtspunten.

Studenten krijgen gratis advies en tips van Leidse alumni over loopbaan, solliciteren, netwerken en meer. Het Mentornetwerk is een online platform waar ruim 650 alumni zich aanbieden om studenten te helpen.

Voor veel studenten is door de coronacrisis het groepsgevoel ver te zoeken tijdens de studie. Lettie Dorst, universitair docent vertalen en Engelse taalkunde, vertelt hoe ze probeert toch een ‘community of learners’ te creëren.

De ‘stem van de student’ is belangrijk als we praten over de verdere ontwikkeling van het Honours College. Dus waren er niet alleen hoogleraren en coördinatoren bij de HC Strategiedag, maar ook behoorlijk wat studenten.

Elke twee jaar trekken Leidse studenten de Maleisische regenwouden van Borneo in.
