How to increase your impact in speeches, presentations or meetings

Do you want to inspire, motivate or engage people? As you can imagine, that takes a little bit more than just telling them the facts. Using a story is the best way to get your message across. Still, finding the right story and knowing how and when to tell it can be quite challenging.

Are you looking for an effective way to share your in-depth knowledge with peers or with people outside your field of expertise? Are you worried that you’re not that interesting or would you like to create a better connection with your audience? In this course, you’ll discover the power of a well-chosen personal story that you enjoy telling and learn new ways to bring your message across with more impact.

The power of a story

Stories have the ability to inspire people. They connect and give meaning. They appeal to the imagination of your audience and create space for new solutions and perspectives. In other words: stories encourage others to listen. And the great thing is: everyone has a story. You too have a great many stories you can use to engage your audience.  You just have to find them.

But how do you find these stories? When do you tell them? And how do you apply them in your daily practice, in which, for example, you give a presentation or a speech or you want to make yourself or your point more visible? How do you link these stories to your message? And how do you tell the story as impactfully as possible?

For any questions please e-mail learning@fgga.leidenuniv.nl.

During this Storytelling course we will focus on collecting, composing, telling and applying stories. What stories do you already have in your backpack? Which story fits your message? How do you use a story for a specific purpose and for which audience?

We pay attention to the structure and content of your message and the importance of knowing what it is that you want to convey.
We reflect on you as a speaker: what excites you, what do you like, what are your specific talents and how can you use that in your story?
Then we will discuss how you can engage others and how you bring your story to life.
Amongst other things, we will use the narrative model of the Hero's Journey. We’ll provide useful structures that help you to apply the above points in practice.

During the course you will work on a story of your choice which serves your professional purposes. At the end of the course you will be able to create more impact in your communication by consciously using stories. On the last day of the course you will provide a short performance.

The emphasis in the training is on the spoken word.

There is a lot of space to practice and participants receive feedback from the trainers and each other.

The Summer Course Storytelling is for:

  • People who want to learn how they can use the power of their (own) stories to create more impact and connection in their daily (working) practice.
  • Managers, administrators, directors, scientists, researchers, professors, in short everyone who speaks to groups on a regular basis.
  • People who want to engage others with their vision, perspective or product.

There is a maximum of 15 spots available.

Participants work on shaping their own story during the course. At the end of the training, each participant gives a final presentation. They will also reflect on the most important insights and questions that arose during the course.

After the Summer Course you will:

  • have broadened your knowledge and skills of storytelling;
  • be able to compose a story;
  • be able to tell your story in an understandable and attractive way (and applying it to achieve a professional goal, for example in a presentation, a speech or during a meeting);
  • be able to create a better connection with your audience, and create more impact in your communication.
