Dr. Thomas Franssen will take the stage for his presentation, see details below. The presentation will be followed by an opportunity to discuss the entanglement between science, industry and science policy in the context of sustainability transitions.
Science for sustainability transitions: how do we navigate industry collaborations?
External project funding has become increasingly important in academia and funding programmes are nowadays often developed around particular missions and societal grand challenges (such as the Nationale Wetenschapsagenda).
Pros and cons of collaboration
Collaboration with societal partners and private companies is a requirement for funding applications. Such funding programmes potentially allow for exciting transdisiciplinary projects through which scientists can make important contributions to sustainability transitions. But meanwhile, they also pose some ethical conundrums that we want to highlight today.
Urgent need of reform
Many scientific disciplines have a history of tight collaborations with industries, such as extractivist industries and large-scale agriculture, that in light of the transition to a more sustainable future are in urgent need of reform. This lunch meeting aims to start a discussion about the entanglement between science, industry and science policy in the context of sustainability transitions.
Who do we support?
Do we support sustainability transitions by working with industries that (continue to) contribute to environmental degradation? Or, should we seek to join forces with NGOs and citizen groups that oppose them? How do we engage with funding programmes that provide funding to explore controversial ‘technological fixes’ like geo-engineering or that support green technologies that rely on continued extraction of rare minerals in the Global South?
Exploring industrial entanglements
In this lunch meeting we explore the industrial entanglements that different scientific disciplines find themselves in historically, and the ethical conundrums they have to navigate today. After a short introduction by Thomas Franssen (Centre for Science and Technology Studies) colleagues from very different parts of the University will reflect on these questions.

The Liveable Planet programme is one of the eight interdisciplinary programmes that were launched at Leiden University in 2020
Leiden’s Liveable Planet programme aims to combine scientific, policy, socio-cultural and historical/archaeological research at Leiden University into coherent research with which we can tackle the major challenges of a transition to a habitable planet with ecological sustainability. The programme will serve as a hub for the wide range of relevant research carried out within Leiden University and welcomes interaction with colleagues interested in contributing to the initiative within as well as outside of Leiden University.
