Fact-finding missions and truth and reconciliation commissions have been playing a key role in the acknowledgment of serious violations committed against indigenous peoples. This panel will discuss the mandate and importance of such mechanisms, as well as their role in bringing justice to the victims of (international) crimes. The panellists will also address the possibility of using the evidence collected by the commissions, as well as their findings and recommendations as trial evidence before international courts and tribunals. Topics of discussion include, but are not limited to,:

  • The mandate, advantages, and limitations of fact-finding missions and truth and reconciliation commissions;
  • The role of truth and reconciliation commissions in ending impunity against indigenous peoples;
