For our April session, we focus on sharing location data, introduced by Pascal Flohr (UBL) and Adam Benfer (Archaeology).

Abstract

Spatial data are an integral part of research datasets in disciplines like archaeology, geology, ecology, and many more. Without these location data, a dataset may not be very meaningful. At first sight there appear to be no restrictions on sharing most location data, as long as no personal data are involved (i.e. locations of living people). However, sharing the position of a heritage site may encourage looting; sharing location data of certain plant or animal species may endanger these; while, as a third example, the location of particular raw materials may be commercially sensitive. In this talk, we look at how to establish a balance between openly sharing location data and protecting what needs to be protected. We use a framework derived from ecology and applied to archaeological case studies; we offer ideas and welcome input into if and how this can be applied to the disciplines of the webinar’s participants. Finally, we will present several methods for (partly) obfuscating location data.

This session

This Connect & session takes place online and will last one hour. After the talk there will be time for questions and informal discussion. Everyone interested in thet topic is very welcome to join. If you are part of the Leiden University Research Data Management Community you will have received a calendar invite. If you are not on the contact list, you can register by filling out the form.

About the Connect & sessions

This event is part of the “Connect and …” series arranged by, and for, the Leiden University Research Data Management Community, on everything data management-related. The sessions take place every month at different days and times, so as to maximize access according to people’s different working hours, and are normally online. Topics and speakers are proposed by members of the Community. You can post a suggestion in the Community's MSTeams space, or write to datamanagement@library.leidenuniv.nl, if you have a topic you would like to discuss in a future meeting and the CDS team will help to make it happen.
