To kick off the 2026 Open Science Week, we look into how Open Science can enhance equitable collaborations through this Open Science NL funded workshop. We draw inspiration from the recenly set up partnership between the University of Ghana and Leiden University.

Abstract

Collaborations and partnerships between institutions in the Global North and South are increasingly encouraged. Open Science is also increasingly adopted. This creates opportunities for open research practices to strategically support transparent, sustainable, and equitable inter-university collaborations. Nonetheless, how Open Science is embedded at institutional levels varies considerably, reflecting funding and resources, institutional and national infrastructures, and career assessment strategies. To successfully embed Open Science within inter-university collaborations, it is an essential first step to understand these variations and to align priorities and practices. At the moment, Open Science tends not to be a key point discussed during setting up partnerships, and research support staff are often not involved.

The ambition of this workshop is therefore to start a national dialogue on how Open Science commitments can be more strategically positioned in inter-university partnerships. We build on the recently set up partnership between the University of Ghana and Leiden University, as part of which research support staff are having bilateral conversations on similarities and differences of approaches, sharing capacity building opportunities, and developing an ‘open science checklist’. During the workshop we will broaden this to a national discussion.
