Tuesday Talk is de maandelijkse dosis onderzoeksinspiratie van Leiden Science, van onze medewerkers, voor onze medewerkers en alle andere nieuwsgierigen. De voertaal voor deze lezingenserie is Engels.
Quantum technology is surrounded by enormous expectations. From quantum computers to ultra-secure communication, breakthroughs regularly make the headlines and attract major public and private investment. With so much public funding and so many promises of societal impact, this technological revolution also comes with a responsibility. How do we develop such a transformative technology responsibly?
Join us for this Tuesday Talk, where Julia Cramer explores the relationship between quantum science and society. How should we communicate both the promises and the risks of quantum technology? What are the ethical implications of generating hype around technologies that are still in development? And how can researchers, policymakers, and the public work together to shape the future of quantum innovation?

Opening Academic Year - Faculty of ScienceBeyond Quantum Technology
Quantum science is advancing at an unprecedented pace, but technological innovation does not happen in isolation. Public expectations, governance, regulation, and communication all influence how new technologies develop and how society responds to them.
Drawing on her recent research, Julia Cramer will share new insights into how quantum science and technology are communicated to the public and what this can mean for responsible innovation. She will also sketch her vision for an interdisciplinary research and teaching agenda within Leiden University's Quantum & Space theme. With leading expertise in quantum science, communication, law, governance, and the social sciences, Leiden is uniquely positioned to explore how quantum technologies can be developed responsibly and in dialogue with society.
About the speaker
Julia Cramer is Assistant Professor of Quantum & Society at the Leiden Institute of Physics and at Science Communication and Society(Institute of Biology Leiden). Trained as a quantum physicist, her research now focuses on the societal impact of quantum science and technology. She studies how emerging quantum technologies are communicated, governed, and understood, with a particular interest in public engagement. Julia is also the lead of the university theme Quantum and Space and actively contributes to national and international initiatives on the ethical, legal, and societal aspects of quantum technology.
