Workshop Contact improvisation: the fundamentals | Saturday 1 June

A workshop taught in the memory and honour of Steve Paxton whose love for gravity and curiosity allowed the form of contact improvisation to develop as it has today . (English spoken)

Docent
Natalie Heller

All levels welcome!

“ Two people move together, in contact, maintaining spontaneous physical dialogue through kinaesthetic sensual signals of shared weight and common or counterpoised momentum. The body, in order to open to the sensations of momentum, weight and balance, must learn to release excess muscular tension and abandon a certain amount of wilful volition to the natural flow of movement at hand. Skills such as rolling, falling, and being upside down are explored, guiding the body to an awareness of its own natural movement possibilities.”
Danny Lepkoff , Contact Improvisation/ A definition- Contact Quarterly, Vol II, No. 4

Contact Improvisation is a partner dance, usually done in duets (but sometimes alone or in larger groups). We use rolling, sliding, pushing and pulling to keep a constant point of contact with our partner. In this workshop we will learn the fundamentals of this dance form. You can expect to practice weight sharing, partner exercises, hands on explorations of anatomy and improvisation in physical contact.
