Combined professorship 0,5 fte

  1. Professor by special appointment (bijzonder hoogleraar) for the chair “Intercultural Performing Arts’, 1 day per week (0.2 fte) at Leiden University
  2. Professor (’lector’) Intercultural Performing Arts (0.3 fte) at Codarts University of the Arts Rotterdam

The positions will be combined into one nomination.


The successful candidate will be part time employed by Codarts University of Arts Rotterdam. For the Professor by special appointment part, the candidate is assigned by Codarts to work at Leiden University/ACPA for one day per week for a period of five years.

  1. Professor by special appointment (bijzonder hoogleraar) for the chair “Intercultural Performing Arts’, 1 day per week (0.2 fte) at Leiden University:

The professor by special appointment “Intercultural Performing Arts’ will be expected to devote one day per week to teaching and research at Leiden University. The professor will become a full member of the academic community of the Academy of Creative and Performing Arts (ACPA) at the Faculty of Humanities.


•      To conduct scholarly research in the field of Intercultural Performing Arts with a focus on practice-based artistic research in music 

•      To carry out teaching for the Leiden University community

•      To initiate, stimulate, and supervise doctoral research

•      To bring the field to the attention of a wide audience, in the Netherlands and abroad, by means of lectures and publications in conventional and new media

•      To represent ACPA and to connect Intercultural Performing Arts to societal issues

Selection Criteria

  • PhD degree in a relevant field
  • Solid international research portfolio and reputation in Intercultural Performing Arts
  • Experience in supervising PhD research
  • Ability to attract research funding
  • Broad teaching experience and outstanding teaching qualities
  • Good proficiency in the English and preferably also the Dutch language
  • Possession of the University Teaching Qualification (Basis Kwalificatie Onderwijs) or willingness to acquire it in the Leiden setting
  • Empathic and unifying leadership

About ACPA

ACPA is a research institute of the Faculty of Humanities at Leiden University and embodies the collaboration between Leiden University and the University of the Arts The Hague (the Royal Conservatoire and the Royal Academy of Art). In addition to research in and through the arts, ACPA offers academic education for art students in The Hague and art education for students at Leiden University.   • Conducting research in the field of Intercultural Performing Arts, with a focus on practice-based artistic research in music
  • Providing and developing education in the field of Intercultural Performing Arts, with a focus on musical diversity
  • Supervising research by faculty and postdocs
  • Establishing links and collaborations with other relevant institutes of higher education and research
  • Acquisition of research funding
  • Contributing to the public distribution of knowledge of and to the public debate on Intercultural Performing Arts, especially with regard to music
  • Connecting Intercultural Performing Arts to societal issues


  • A doctorate in a field relevant to the domain of study and research, e.g., artistic research or cultural musicology
  • Experience at the intersection of research and performance practice, preferably as practitioner-scholar, and the capacity to connect artistic knowledge to science and the humanities
  • Excellent research qualities, evidenced by a track record of publications and other research output
  • Experience with the supervision of master and PhD students
  • Proven experience and achievements in teaching higher education, preferably also in higher arts education
  • Knowledge of discussions and concerns with regard to cultural diversity and inclusivity
  • Excellent command of English; preferably proficiency in Dutch
  • A demonstrable and relevant international network
  • Ability with the acquisition of research funding
  • Expertise in at least two genres of music

Terms and Conditions for the combined position

The Lector Intercultural Performing Arts (0.3 fte) and the holder of the special chair will be employed by Codarts. The chair is financed by Codarts. The professor by special appointment - based as lector at Codarts Rotterdam – will be assigned by Codarts to work at Leiden University/ACPA for five years for 0,2 fte (7,6 hrs). The starting date is September 1, 2022 or sooner if possible.   

Conditions of employment

•             Salary depending on experience in scale 15 (€ min 5797,40, max € 7485,19 gross per month based on 1,0 fte in accordance with the HBO collective labor agreement for 2021

•             the contract will be for 5 years, with the possibility of extension

•             appointment and renumeration are in accordance with the collective agreement for higher professional vocational education cao-hbo
