Support for Research, Laboratories and Education (SOLO) of the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences is looking for an
XR Research Programmer (0.8 FTE)
Vacancy number 22-535 12522
At the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences, scientists are increasingly making use of the possibilities offered by immersive technologies to research emotional and physical responses of users. In addition, we are expanding our VR lab rooms as part of a new-state-of-the-art research facility which will be available to the larger SSH (Social Sciences and Humanities) community at the University of Leiden.
In light of these developments, the faculty’s research and education support department (SOLO), is looking for an XR Research Programmer with experience with Unity3D or equivalent game engines.
You will be responsible for developing and maintaining XR projects, and provide XR-related assistance and training to researchers. You have experience in developing complete XR projects, and are specialised in either character modelling / rigging and animation, or the collection and processing of XR behavioural data. We offer an interesting position at a dynamic place of work and cutting-edge research. You will be part of a small multidisciplinary team of (XR) programmers, research developers and lab technicians delivering high-level support to researchers of the Institutes of Psychology and Education and Child Studies. Both independently, and as part of this team, you will assist researchers in developing XR studies for their research. You will assist in the design process and provide your expertise in XR engineering.
Develop XR projects and troubleshoot ongoing XR research
You will be responsible for developing optimised, maintainable, and reusable (parts of) XR applications, and have a key role and testing these applications. Aside from assisting researchers in developing full XR experiences, you will be responsible to develop parts of XR projects based on your expertise (modelling or data collection etc).
Provide XR training and guidance to researchers and students
You will contribute to enhancing the departments overall expertise in building and using XR applications by preparing manuals, wikis, and training for social science researchers, for them to be able to use XR equipment and applications. You will also contribute to the public dissemination of this work. You are encouraged to collaborate in on-going projects and develop innovative ideas for future projects.
- HBO/WO degree; XR-specific vocational training and/or a demonstrable track-record in XR development.
- Experience with XR development in Unity3D or equivalent game engines.
- Expertise in at least one of these areas:
- Character modelling, rigging, and animation, including facial animations.
- Collection and processing of XR behavioural data.
- Experience with version control software (e.g. Git).
- Experience with various HMD systems.
- Excellent verbal and written skills (Dutch and English).
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Flexible, customer-oriented and eager to learn.
- Affinity with academic research.
