The Faculty of Science is now looking to appoint a Scientific Director of the Mathematical Institute (MI). Reporting to the Faculty Board, the Scientific Director will spearhead the institute and steer it towards its ambitions.

The MI is one of eight research institutes at the Faculty of Science. Its mission is to perform high-quality research at the frontiers of mathematical knowledge and to educate future generations of mathematicians and statisticians in a friendly but challenging environment. The staff members are dedicated to push the boundaries of mathematical knowledge and to contribute their experience towards solving problems faced in other sciences, society and industry. The institute also offers educational programmes in pure and applied mathematics and statistics. In addition, it provides education for several other programmes within the faculty.
The MI works together closely with other Dutch mathematical departments, through Mastermath (a national collaboration in Master-level education) and the Dutch Platform for Mathematics.

Job Description
The Scientific Director (SD) chairs the institute board consisting of three members, who together are in charge of the overall management of the institute and specifically hold final responsibility for its scientific and educational processes, finances, and personnel policy. The SD is portfolio holder for the development and implementation of the institute’s research strategy and research quality assurance, as well as the hiring strategy of academic personnel.

Acting as a role model, the SD encourages a culture in which open discussion is promoted and staff and students feel free to engage with each other. The SD values and nurtures talent, has a keen eye for diversity, and develops beneficial partnerships across the institute and beyond. The SD is committed to consensus-driven and transparent decision making, but at the same time takes the lead in difficult decisions if the situation calls for it.

The Scientific Director is also committed to the interests of the Faculty of Science as a whole and contributes, together with the Scientific Directors of the other faculty institutes, to the development and implementation of the faculty’s strategic course.

The Scientific Director will be appointed as a full Professor in the MI. Generally, it is expected that the Scientific Director builds and sustains an independent line of research and contributes to teaching, in size commensurate with the time investment needed to fulfil the administrative tasks.

Profile
The Scientific Director will be appointed as a full Professor. They have a PhD in a mathematical subject and bring commensurate leadership abilities and managerial experience.

In addition, the ideal candidate:

  • Is transparent, provides a listening ear yet can be decisive when need be;
  • Is a strategic thinker, who can unite people behind a shared goal;
  • Has a natural way to commit to and connect different interests, and can link these across multiple levels;
  • Is able to create and maintain an open, diligent and respectful culture of consultation and communication, with a keen eye for diversity and inclusion;
  • Values the various aspects of mathematical science practice, including research, teaching, leadership and societal impact;
  • Sets clear expectations and goals, and works towards results with confidence, balance and focus;
  • Is self-reflective and can put things into perspective;
  • Is familiar with the Dutch academic culture, and preferably has a good command of the Dutch language.
