Lab manager (0.6 – 0.8 FTE) as soon as possible

Leiden University Centre for Linguistics (LUCL) is one of seven Institutes that falls under the Faculty of Humanities. With over 120 linguists working at the Institute, it is a rich research environment that prides itself on fostering scientific excellence. The Academic Language Centre, as part of LUCL, provides language services to university students and staff but also to individuals and groups outside the university.

Our lab facilities are part of the Social and Behavioural Sciences and Humanities (SSH-labs) housing state-of-the-art lab facilities used for experimental research within the field of social sciences and humanities. The LUCL Labs consist of four spaces equipped to conduct high-quality experimental linguistic research. Students and employees can use the phonetics lab, baby lab, eye-tracking and EEG/ERP facilities to conduct experiments.

As lab manager, you, together with two lab technicians, will be responsible for managing the lab facilities and supporting experimental research in psycho- and neurolinguistics and experimental linguistics. You will also be teaching experimental methodology as part of the BA and MA Linguistics programmes as well as providing training to users of the labs.

Key responsibilities:

  • Providing hands-on training sessions to users of the lab
  • Advising on experiments and lab facilities, including promoting the visibility of the labs
  • Process coordination from intake to implementation of lab research
  • Planning of research at the labs and monitoring staffing levels
  • Teaching the subjects Experimental Methodology I & II in the BA and MA programs in Linguistics
  • Supervising the lab technicians
  • Making (online) documentation available and keeping it up to date to increase the self-reliance of researchers
  • Advising on the replacement and purchase of equipment and software
  • Co-responsibility for the purchase and the purchasing process
  • Creating multiannual budgets for LUCL labs
  • Regularly consulting with the lab managers of the other SSH labs, with the lab coordinators of LUCL labs, as well as with data steward, the Institute Manager and the Scientific Director of LUCL
  • Maintaining contact with the Real Estate department and the architects in connection with the construction of the LUCL labs as part of the new Humanities Campus
  • Following current developments in research important for research activities in the SSH Labs
  • If appointed for 0.8 FTE, this position also offers the opportunity for you to conduct your own research

We are looking for somebody:

  • with a background in (psycho)linguistics/experimental psychology, neurocognition;
  • experience with linguistics and experimental research;
  • who is proactive, efficient and accurate, a good planner, and is service-oriented
  • who is a team player and at the same time able to work independently
  • who has excellent oral and written communication skills in both Dutch and English.

Our institute
LUCL has a longstanding tradition in the study of the world’s languages and features unique linguistic expertise; from historical, descriptive linguistics, language use in the present and the past, to theoretical and experimental linguistics. Current theoretical insights are combined with modern experimental methods in its research profile area ‘Language Diversity in the World’. Researchers from our six umbrella research groups are experts in their respective fields but equally find innovative ways of collaborating with other fields and disciplines.

The Faculty of Humanities has expertise in fields such as philosophy, religious studies, history, art history, literature, linguistics and area studies covering nearly every region of the world. Terms and conditions
We offer a temporary appointment of one year and with the possibility of a fixed appointment, based on funding, need and performance. Salary ranges from € 4,332.- to € 5,929.- gross per month (pay scale 11) based on fulltime employment in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Depending on qualifications, you may start at the appropriate step in scale 10 until you fully meet the requirements for scale 11 as specified by the Faculty of Humanities, particularly with regard to the number of years of relevant work experience. The intended starting date is as soon as possible. You are expected to work in Leiden.
