Het Prisonproject gaat na in hoeverre een gevangenisstraf gevolgen heeft voor onder andere recidive, gezondheid, beroepsloopbanen en intieme relaties van (ex-)gedetineerden.

Hoe beter de behandeling van gedetineerden, hoe effectiever de gevangenisstraf, zo blijkt. Leidse criminologen onderzoeken daarom hoe detentie kan worden verbeterd, onder meer op gebied van leefklimaat en contact tussen gedetineerden en hun kinderen.

Mensen jarenlang opsluiten in een gevangenis werkt niet en kost de samenleving veel geld, zeggen experts. Hoogleraar Criminologie en Vergelijkende Penologie Miranda Boone stelt tegenover NEMO Kennislink dat het anders moet: ‘Het strafrecht zoals we het nu inzetten, werkt niet.’
