Program Description
The two-year Advanced Masters programme offers a unique blend of academic education in international relations and political science with practical graduate education and training in international negotiation and diplomacy. It offers high-level academic preparation for professions in areas such as diplomacy, international negotiations, governmental and non-governmental organizations and think tanks. The programme was founded in 2003 and is taught in English. It is organized in collaboration with Leiden University’s Institute of Political Science and with the Netherlands Institute of International Relations ‘Clingendael'. The programme has been housed in the Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs (FGGA) in The Hague since 2014. The Education/Research Officer cooperates closely with the program coordinator in the daily operations of the programme and the support of the program director.

What you will do

  • Contribute to the daily operations of the MIRD programme and support the MIRD program director.;
  • Contribution to community building and career preparations for the program, in cooperation with relevant stakeholders;
  • Leading the coordination of courses to ensure a high quality of education:
    • Closely communicating with Faculty and adjunct instructors;
    • Ensuring milestones are completed in three important stages: before the course, during the course, and at finalization of the course;
    • Monitor scheduling of rooms for courses;
    • Providing ad-hoc support, trouble shooting, and answering questions from students and instructors; and
    • Closely liaising with other university departments.
  • Leading the coordination of the 15 ECTS Thesis Module:
    • Closely communicating with the Thesis Lab instructors, supervisors, second readers, students, Clingendael, and the Political Science department;
    • Delivering workshops and presentations to the students;
    • Processing input from general surveys;
    • Answering questions on Thesis Guidelines and Thesis Requirements;
    • Supervisor and Second Reader allocations; and
    • Processing university repository publication requests.
  • Managing contracts for adjunct instructors, thesis supervisors and second readers;
  • Supporting the management and coordination of student and course data;
  • Monitoring the general inbox and answering messages;
  • Serving as Secretary to the Education Committee; contribute to program development.
  • Ad-hoc support to MIRD extra-curricular activities and field trips; and
  • Ad-hoc support to the internship module.

The Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs, located in The Hague – the International City of Peace and Justice – offers a range of other programs focused on international relations, security, international law and international organization. Institute of Security and Global Affairs
The Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) is a leading research and education institute, focusing on the most pressing local, national, European and global security issues from an interdisciplinary perspective. It currently hosts more than 120 academic and support staff members and offers the BA in Security Studies, the MSc in Crisis and Security Management, the Advanced MSc in International Relations and Diplomacy, the executive MSc in Cyber Security as well as a variety of innovative teaching offerings in the professional and MOOC fields. In addition, ISGA runs popular Minor Programmes in Global Affairs, Security, Safety and Justice and Intelligence Studies as well as the Faculty’s Honour Programme in Security and Global Affairs.

What you bring

  • Experience in an academic education institution, knowledge of legislation and regulations in higher education and experience with processes in an educational institution (preferably within Leiden University);
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Experience with international students; experience in community building is an asset.
  • Knowledge of the substantive areas of International Relations and Diplomacy is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of the (international) job market for MIRD graduates is a strong asset.
  • Excellent oral and written command of English, command of Dutch is an asset;
  • Proficient in MS Office; a proven insight into various systems within Leiden University is an advantage;
  • Motivated, flexible and proactive.
  • You enjoy a challenge, easily respond to changing circumstances and are stress-resistant. You can put order in complex situations and have a good understanding of administrative processes. You are customer-friendly, solution-oriented and a team player.

What we offer
It concerns a temporary appointment for maternity leave coverage from 3 June 2024 – 20 February 2025.
Salary range from € 3.377,-- to € 5.090,-- gross per month (pay scale 9-10, depending on qualifications and experience) in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.
