Our June Connect & session is part of the UBL Centre for Digital Scholarship (CDS) Summer Training Week. CDSers Fleur Praal and Femmy Admiraal speal about publishing journal articles and datasets and how these are (or can be) linked.

Abstract

How do (journal) publications and datasets relate to each other, and how can that relationship be made explicit and maintained? Datasets may be published as supplementary material to a publication, published as a stand-alone dataset, or be described in a data publication. What’s the difference, and why, or when, would researchers choose one or the other option?

In this event, we will compare the kinds of relations that may exist between different types of academic output. We will contrast two perspectives on data and publications: publisher-centric with the traditional journal publication at its heart, versus community-based, making use of other sharing platforms including preprint services and discipline-specific data repositories. We will present examples and suggestions and have plenty of time to discuss how these perspectives resonate in the fields of the webinar participants.

This session

This Connect & session takes place online and will last one hour. After the talk there will be time for questions and informal discussion. Everyone interested in thet topic is very welcome to join. If you are part of the Leiden University Research Data Management Community you will have received a calendar invite. If you are not on the contact list, you can register by filling out the form.

About the Connect & sessions

This event is part of the “Connect and …” series arranged by, and for, the Leiden University Research Data Management Community, on everything data management-related. The sessions take place every month at different days and times, so as to maximize access according to people’s different working hours, and are normally online. Topics and speakers are proposed by members of the Community. You can post a suggestion in the Community's MSTeams space, or write to datamanagement@library.leidenuniv.nl, if you have a topic you would like to discuss in a future meeting and the CDS team will help to make it happen.
