Deze sessie zal in het Engels gehouden worden. De informatie over deze sessie is alleen in het Engels beschikbaar.

Network theory is a mathematical discipline that studies properties of interconnected collections of points, and offers us concepts and methods that can help to understand the nature and the structure of networks. The objective of the workshop is to equip participants with both a conceptual understanding of networks and hands-on experience in visualising and analysing network data. For this, we will use Gephi: a free, open-source software platform designed for visualizing, exploring, and analyzing complex networks, graphs, and relational data.

The workshop will begin with an overview of key concepts in network theory, including nodes, edges, degree, centrality measures, clustering, and modularity. Participants will then be introduced to Gephi’s interface and its core functionalities, enabling them to import datasets, manipulate network structures, and apply layout algorithms for effective network visualisation. By the end of the session, attendees will be able to construct, explore, and interpret network graphs using Gephi. Practical exercises will guide participants through essential analytical techniques, such as filtering data, calculating network metrics, and identifying significant patterns or communities within a network. During the session, participants will:

  • Import and prepare data for network analysis in Gephi
  • Create and customize network visualisations
  • Apply basic analytical measures to interpret network structures
  • Identify patterns, clusters, and key nodes within a network

Target audience

Researchers (including PhDs). No prior experience with network analysis or Gephi is required. However, participants are encouraged to bring their own datasets if they wish to explore their research data during the session.

Organisation

This workshop is organised by the UBL Centre for Digital Scholarship as part of our Summer Training Week 2026. Check the whole week's Programme overview, and register for one or more workshops through the registration form.
