About the event

The European Union brings together 27 member states, each shaped by distinct histories, traditions, and political cultures. But how do these differences play out inside the institutions that govern the Union—and how do they resonate beyond them? EUROTYPES is an ERC Starting Grant project that examines whether and how cultural perceptions influence the everyday work of EU governance. Building on insights from social psychology and cross-cultural research, the project investigates how citizens, civil servants and political elites in Brussels and across member states perceive nationalities and regions in the EU, and whether such perceptions shape how they communicate, negotiate, and make decisions. Because cultural perceptions are closely tied to stereotypes—including negative and politically charged ones—they can fuel inter-state tensions, create intra-institutional friction, and shape public narratives across the EU. Understanding these dynamics contributes to strengthening trust and combatting discriminatory practices, thereby improving the legitimacy and functioning of the EU as a whole.
