This bring-your-own-lunch session in Ethics in Archaeology will address current challenges surrounding fieldwork requirements, including limited excavation opportunities and the rising cost of participation.

Key questions:

  • Is fieldwork experience a measure of merit, or access to opportunity?
  • Should archaeology require training that many students cannot afford?
  • If there are not enough excavation placements, should requirements change?
  • Are field schools training opportunities or gatekeeping mechanisms?
