Collecting: A problem or an opportunity?

By Emeritus Professor Pieter ter Keurs

Collecting is a universal phenomenon. It serves to create order in a chaotic reality, but it can also lead to sickly hording and losing contact with reality. For archaeology, anthropology and art history collections have been crucial in developing our knowledge of the past, foreign cultures, and our sense of belonging. Material objects are not just illustrations of reality; they are sources of knowledge as well.

How do individual collectors deal with objects and collections? Are they active agents in the process of collecting or are the objects the active agents? And when does "normal' collecting becomes "abnormal"? In this lecture the psychological and ethical aspects of collecting will take centre stage.

A short lecture on hope

By Lama Abboud, PhD candidate on Heritage Management

Lama Abboud is personally and professionally involved with the Turathuna Foundation, established after the civil war in Syria to preserve Syrian heritage. The Turathuna Project offers Syrians the opportunity to share the beauty of their heritage with the rest of the world by making traditional products. These products are more than objects; they are expressions of resilience, identity, and empowerment for communities in crisis.

Each piece from Turathuna art is a blend of heritage, craftsmanship, sustainability, and creativity, while supporting local artisans—both women and men—whose lives have been shaped by conflict. During the End of Year Drinks attendees may purchase some of the products made by these Syrian artisans at Lama Abboud’s stand.
