We'll fuel you with new energy and ideas for future-proofing your teaching. Together, we'll zoom in on INSPIRATION, EFFECTIVE EFFICIENCY and RADICAL CHANGES.
- Inspiration -- Learn from other teachers and colleagues. This conference is designed to energize you with new ideas and fuel your teaching for the times to come.
- Effective efficiency -- In times of budget cuts, we need to optimize the efficiency of high quality education. How can you handle large reviewing tasks? Can AI assist you? And how will a limited number of teachers handle large groups of students?
- Radical changes -- Difficult times often require radical changes. From reconsidering fundamentals such as grading, to new and engaging modes of education; we'll take you along in an exploration of educational innovation.
What to expect? A very warm welcome, a tasty vegetarian lunch, a quiz, time to connect with colleagues and more! In her keynote speech, prof. dr. Sybille Lammes will introduce playful tools for radical changes in our teaching methods. Her keynote will be equally original and divided in two. In part one, it will kick us off with a number of provocations to consider. At the end of the day, it will unite us in an exploration of playful teaching methods and their applications. Keynote speaker
In her keynote speech and closing session, prof. dr. Sybille Lammes will introduce and discuss the possibility of playful tools for radical changes in our teaching methods. Play is a powerful cultural force and can change our understanding of and practices of education. It makes us (students and teachers) think on our feet, and fosters creativity, collaboration and speculative thinking. Sybille will start with exploring the field or ‘state-of-play’ in education so far, partly using her own teaching practices over the years as well as those of others. She will also reflect on more traditional and mainstream takes on pedagogy and play over time including the more recent trend of gamification. Based on this exploration of the field, she will end with some provocations and speculations on what play could mean for radical change in teaching practices. At the end of the day, her session will unite us in an exploration of existing and future playful teaching methods and their applications and potentials.

This workshop introduces you to a fractal approach to transformation towards sustainability and equity. Archaeology, like other scientific disciplines, is learned in the field. Fieldwork was, is and will be a key element of archaeological higher education. But how to keep doing this in these demanding times including budget cuts? It isn’t simply taking students into the field anymore! Let's get together and (re)think about inclusive and future-proof fieldwork. It’s a challenging balance between safe, professional and effective, inspirational and educational and fun. AI doesn’t help here!
Propositions:
1. How do we balance safe and inclusive fieldwork versus high quality and professional education and research?
2. In times of budget costs, do we keep executing this relatively costly and therefore unprofitable education ourselves or do we direct students to (commercial) external parties?
3. Can we ‘play in the field’ without going into the field? Can clips, VR, AI, gamification, etc. (also) take over our fieldwork education?

In the academic world, "efficiency" often meets resistance. Many of us feel driven to enhance quality rather than streamline our work, sometimes fearing that efficiency may compromise excellence. But what if efficiency could actually boost quality?
In this workshop, we’ll explore a real-life example—a fresh approach to the bachelor thesis—showing how efficiency-driven changes can elevate didactic quality. Then, through an interactive session, we'll exchange insights and inspire each other to bring these ideas into our own practice.

This interactive workshop offers participants insights and tools to develop an interdisciplinary simulation training themselves. A simulation training gives students the opportunity to learn in a safe authentic setting before they enter the real work field.
During the workshop, pharmacist-teacher-researchers share their own educational innovation, an innovative interprofessional toxicology simulation training in an emergency setting, and their lessons learned. As a participant, you will then get to work with colleagues from different faculties on your own simulation training.

You will learn to design an individual tutor for all students in your courses: a chatbot that helps reach your learning goals instead of undermining them. Our university now offers a safe(!) GenAI system that offers broad possibilities to realize new didactical practices.
In this workshop you will find that it has become easy to create your own GenAI bots that support individual students, with the LUCA system guiding you to create them.

In this workshop, you will explore real-life scenarios that reflect the challenges and dilemmas students face when using AI in their learning. Working in groups, you will discuss, debate, and decide how best to support students in developing ethical, responsible, and productive relationships with AI tools-as a partner in learning-as a friend, not a foe.

In this panel we discuss the benefits and challenges of what has come to be known as ‘ungrading’. What does it mean to ‘ungrade’ our teaching? What might ‘ungrading’ have to offer and what might be lost when we choose to no longer grade our students’ work? The various experiences of our panellists form the starting point for a broader, informal conversation with the audience.
About the LTA Conference
The Education Conference is an annual event organized by Leiden Teachers’ Academy (LTA). The LTA was launched in 2014 to reward top talents in education and stimulate educational innovation. Lecturers who are selected as Teaching Fellows join the Teachers' Academy and are awarded a grant for educational innovation projects. The LTA currently consists of 25 teaching fellows. This year’s education festival is organized by LTA members Anja van der Voort en Aris Politopoulos.
